Eureka !, I found Opal[]
The First European to settle around the area was John McDouall Stuart in 1858. But the actual settlement was no established until 1915. This was when an Opal deposit was discovered in Coober Pedy by Willie Hutchison. Miners moved in a year later. By the end of the 20th Century, there were over 250,000 Mine Shafts.
Why Coober Pedy has become famous[]
Because of the harsh heat in the Australia outback, most families chose to live in dugouts or caves which Coober Pedy has become famous for. It it roughly half way between Adelaide and Alice Springs and in 1987, when the Stuart Highway was completed, Coober Pedy became a Tourist Destination and popular pullover point.
Trivia[]
